About Mrs. Ports

I was born in Salt Lake City, UT but have spent the majority of my life in Elko County.  My parents moved to Wells in 1957 when my father was hired as a high school math teacher and coach.  He was promoted the next year as head teacher at Montello.  I attended Kindergarten and First Grade in Montello.  We moved to  Elko in 1961 when my father became an administrator for the Elko County School District.  Second, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth grade I attended Grammar #2!  Third grade I went to the brand new Northside Elementary.  I attended Junior High School at Grammar #1.  I graduated from Elko High School.

I earned my Bachelor's in Education from Boise State University.  My teaching career began in Homedale, Idaho where I taught Third Grade for seven years.  I returned to Elko County the school year of 1983-84 when I taught Second Grade at Wells combined.  The following year I moved to Grammar #2.  This will be my 35th year of teaching. Teaching is a career that I love.  My goal is to make my students love to learn as much as I do.

I am married to Mark Ports, who retired this year after 28 years of teaching Life Science classes at Great Basin College.  We have two sons.  Roger teaches 7th grade Life Science in Reno and his wife, Jacki, is a Pharmacy Technician.  They have two sons, Hayden (6) and Derek (4).  Mark lives in Elko and is the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship leader for Great Basin College.  His wife, Michaela, is the "other Mrs. Ports" that teaches 6th grade at Flagview Intermediate. They have a liitle girl, Micah, who was born at the end of July.

My favorite things to do mostly involve the great outdoors.  We do a lot of traveling to different mountain ranges in the Great Basin region.  We hike, bird and butterfly watch and enjoy the scenery.  I take lots of photographs of the wildflowers, insects, birds and other animals we see.  Of course, the best times are when our sons and their families join us.  I love being a Grandma.

When I am not outdoors I am usually reading, working on making silver and beaded jewelry or playing with our two dogs, Mayzee the Basset Hound, and Mister Mushroom, the Havanese.
